SRA Training for Tomorrow consultation deadline looms

20 February 2014
Time is running out if you would like your views to be known about the Solicitors Regulation Authority's proposals to legal education and training.

Launched in December, the SRA's consultation, which ends on 25 February, sets out seven proposed changes, which include the removal of complex and inflexible exemption arrangements to create "greater flexibility within the current routes to qualification by enabling us to recognise equivalent education and training".

Others include additional ideas to tackle unnecessary bureaucracy. Solicitors can read about the history of the regulation in question and why it was put into place, and are asked to give feedback on three or four key concerns for each.

This tranche of proposals is part of the SRA's broader Red Tape Initiative aimed at stepping away from proscriptive regulation in legal training and education, and instead working towards being able to establish firm assurances of competence for solicitors.

Chris Kirk-Blythe, CEO of LBS Legal, said: “We welcome any genuine attempt by the SRA to reduce red tape, but when we see so many serious and urgent matters, such as investigations and authorisations work moving at glacial speed, we question whether the SRA really has the time and resource to devote to yet another policy paper and consultation.”

The SRA has been holding free events for solicitors to discuss the proposals for simplifying the regulation of its education and training framework. You can find out more about the Red Tape Initiative SRA Red Tape Initiative.
