SRA Handbook - new edition

10 November 2016

The SRA Handbook has been updated.

The eighteenth edition of the Handbook was released on 1 November. The amendments relate to the changes which came into effect on that date relating to CPD.  In particular, the repeal of the SRA Training Regulations 2011 Part 3 - CPD Regulations, with the effect that the continuing competence regime is mandatory, as distinct from the last practising year, in which the option of continuing to comply with the CPD requirement of 16 hours (subject to certain variations to this amount) was also available.

The November update follows two previous editions of the Handbook published this year, which made the following amendments:

  • August: changes arising from the Insurance Act 2015, which came into force on 12 August, in particular provisions relating to non-disclosure and misrepresentation and including consequential changes to the minimum terms and conditions of PII.  Some text corrections were also made;
  • April: a simplification of the Authorisation Rules, removing the requirement to specify in the application for authorisation the reserved legal activities the practice intended to carry out; the ability to grant authorisation for one or more reserved activities and removal of the power to revoke or suspend authorisation where a body has ceased to carry on the reserved legal activities previously authorised. This edition also included amendments arising from the end of the transitional arrangements relating to regulation of consumer credit activities, with the Handbook now providing for SRA authorised firms to carry out consumer credit under SRA regulation.

The amendments highlight the need to always refer to the latest online edition, rather than a printed copy, of the SRA Handbook.
