The news release does not mention the change to SRA Accounts Rule 20.1(j) (in relation to the arrangements with regard to withdrawals from client account when the client cannot be traced) which also now “live”. From 1st November 2014 you may pay to charity sums of £500.00 or less per client or trust matter without the prior authorisation by the SRA, provided the safeguards set out in Rule 20.2 are followed. The sum has been increased from the previous limit of £50.00 to £500.00.”

The Law Society has issued a practice note about the risks to solicitors posed by this new legislation, which came into force on 30 September.
The SRA has urged all practices to check HM Treasury’s consolidated list of asset freeze targets, which lists designated persons subject to financial sanction under EU or UK legislation.
The practising certificate renewal period opened on Monday 2 October.
